The Bakrid or Eid al-Adha also known as The festival of sacrifice is round the corner. But this year the festival will have little low excitement owing to the pandemic situation around the country. In many states there are lockdown because of which people are unable to prepare for their celebration. However, in Jammu and Kashmir, two day relaxation has been given so that people can purchase for the festival.
Date: All over the world Bakrid is being celebrated on July 31. The date has been announced by Saudi Arabia. But the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid has said that the festival will be celebrated on August 1 in India as per the sighting of the moon.
Significance: The festival Eid al-Adha is celebrated to give honour to Ibrahim who had sacrificed his son Ishmael to show his obedience to God. But, before Ibrahim could sacrifice his son, God gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead of his son. And since then on this day the ritual of sacrificing a goat and preparing a meal is being practised.
Importance: The festival signifies the importance of sacrificing something which is very dear to you. One should always think about others first and then about themselves. Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son who was so dear to him just because he cannot disobey his god.
On this day, Muslims women deck up themselves and purchase new clothes for themselves. They even go to each other house and wish them. However, many states government has asked people to stay indoors and then celebrate the Festival.
