Mission Over Mars (M.O.M.) had every reason to fail, just like the mission itself. Specially because it comes only a month or so after Akshay Kumar blockbuster, Mission Mangal. But just like events folded out in real life, M.O.M. is a success. Keeping you engaged every single minute of the show, M.O.M. tugs at your heartstrings and checks all the boxes to making it a good show.

Probably Ekta Kapoor’s most ambitious project on digital yet, Mission Over Mars is a delight from the very beginning. We meet four scientists at ISA (the fictional equivalent of ISRO) and these four scientists just happen to be women, we are told. We meet them in their work spaces and back at home as well. They’re an absolute pleasure to watch. These women are about to take India to Mars.

Sakshi Tanwar brings her subtlest performance yet as the group leader, Nandita. As formidable and respectable as she is at her workplace, we see her as an insecure mother at home, resorting to questionable things. Mona Singh plays a scientist with a short temper. As brilliant as she is, her mistakes have also led to missions failing in the past. Her commitment to M.O.M. is paramount and she powers through even though she is grappling with being an absent mother, and an ex-husband who is also a colleague. Sakshi and Mona, take a bow.

Nidhi Singh and Palomi Ghosh are the other two, although we wish their characters were a little more fleshed out. These girls face everything, starting from gender bias and personal issues to the interference of politics in science. These themes are what lend the meat to the show. When they finally win, we feel their joy in our bones and our hearts soar with happiness.

Whether or not Mission Over Mars should be compared to Mission Mangal is another story, but it’s a great show that deserves to be watched. And it’s great to not have a male superstar overpowering a story about women.

Our verdict: Binge-worthy
