Taking us deep into the confines of the mind of a criminal is something that has been attempted by many shows in the past. Whether it’s an old show like Criminal Minds or more recently, the Netflix show Mindhunter directed by none other than David Fincher, they’ve managed to provide interesting insights into determining how criminals think and behave. Both shows delve into the Behavioural Science Unit, an FBI wing that is devoted to the study of criminal psychology. Netflix’s latest addition to its crime library is the show Criminal and it looks different from everything we’ve seen so far.

Criminal is a show set in 4 countries – the UK, France, Germany and Spain. The show will go into 3 crimes in each country, making it a total of 12 different crimes/killers. Then comes the interesting part. The entire show is set in the police interrogation room where these criminals are being interviewed and trying to be understood. This is interesting because while a lot of great shows show us the crimes being committed or the aftermath of it, this one will allow us to feel the horror by hearing it from their mouths.

From the trailer, we can also see that there is a panel of people who are deciding whether these people are guilty or innocent, and that it is a tough choice to make, because from the looks of it, the panel is divided on their verdict. This brand new format in the cluttered space of crime thrillers will definitely elevate the genre and take it to a whole new level.

How much of what they say is manipulation and how much is the truth? This is a moral decision that we as viewers need to make. Criminal stars David Tennant (of Good Omens fame) and Hayley Atwell (of Avengers: Endgame fame) among a host of other actors.

Criminal will be streaming on Netflix from September 20th.
