Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has been a trending topic of discussion on social media ever since its release on Netflix on May 1. Starring an ensemble cast, netizens have been taking to their social media handles to start discussions about the show and its plot. However, one of the discussions that have stood out is about Sharmin Segal’s performance as Alamzeb, an aspiring poetess who is forced to become a tawaaif by her mother (Manisha Koirala). Her expressionless eyes and bland dialogue delivery have irked many and it seems like her co-stars share the same sentiments.
The 28-year-old actress goes on to hit back at Sonakshi and Sanjeeda Shaikh, who are sitting on the opposite side. She says, “Sanjeeda Heeramandi main Waheeda bani hain, is baat pe ek sher arz karna chahti hoon. Waheeda ke naseeb main batua hai khaali, Fareedan (Sonakshi’s character) se kya dosti karogi voh khud hai jaali (fraud)? Choti behen hoke dushman ke saath haath mila liya. Yeh karke, apni khud ki aukaat gira di.”
For those who don’t know, the video went viral days after SLB was accused of casting the Malaal actress in the show just because she was his niece and not because of her talent. Many had expressed their disappointment over the Gangubai filmmaker favouring nepotism. Sharmin is the daughter of Bhansali Segal and Deepak Segal.
Released on 1st May 2024, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s first web series. The show stars an ensemble cast of Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Sharmin Segal, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, and many others in pivotal roles.
