#CancelNetflix has been trending on Twitter since morning. The reason behind this trend is the latest French film Cuties. The subject line of the film has got the film in trouble and the biggest streaming platform Netflix is facing the backlash from the active users on the platform for showcasing such a controversial movie. Yes, you heard it right, #CancelNetflix is trending on Twitter only because of the movie Cuties which is helmed by writer/director Maïmouna Doucouré.
Cuties is based on the plot of a Senegalese young girl, who is settled in Paris and joins a free-spirited dance clique’ program to escape family dysfunction. After reviewing the film, critics believe the film portrays children in a sexualized manner. Well, Cuties did not face any issues in France or at Sundance but the people are going crazy over Netflix for showcasing such a controversial topic so much that netizens got #CancelNetflix trending. To everyone’s attention, Maïmouna Doucouré won the World Cinema section directing award for the film in Sundance Film Festival.
But the response was vice-versa on Netflix, the best online film streaming platform, which is loved by millions for its content. The movie released on September 9, on Netflix and it became the talking point for everyone.
In no time people picked up a movement to Cancel Netflix and become the hot topic to share their views on the film. The poster of the film portrayed the images of sexualizing the eleven-year-old girls at the centre of the film's plot, which was not appreciated by the audience and they showed their outrage on Twitter, making the hashtag #CancelNetflix on top position on Twitter. After getting all the negative reviews (one person) actor Tessa Thompson called it a "beautiful film."
