Rajma Chawal is an aptly titled film. No, the film has nothing to do with food. But a bowl of rajma chawal spells comfort and so does this film. The film premiered on Netflix a couple of years back but skipped the radar somehow. It is a sweet film that will make you feel good and teach you a thing or two about family.
The setting is Delhi and we meet a middle class family. Rishi Kapoor plays a father and a man plagued by his wife’s death. Father to a young son, he is trying to bridge the huge communication gap that exists between them. The son (Anirudh Tanwar) is plagued by the fact that his father doesn’t understand him and to make matters worse, his father chooses to move to old Delhi, far away from the lavish, modern life of certain parts of the city.
As it often happens to parents at a certain age, Rishi Kapoor’s character is desperate to connect with his son and decides to assume a fake personality online on a social networking profile. And thus begins a journey between father and son which is both heart-warming and hilarious at the same time.
Directed by Leena Yadav, Rajma Chawal belongs to her. Her direction is tight and weaves the story beautifully. The performances are good too, but Rishi Kapoor manages to steal the show. Every frame he is in, he owns.
The cinematography of the show deserves special mention too with the visuals taking us to the little lanes of Delhi as if we were there ourselves. With the generation gap widening with each generation, Rajma Chawal is a reminder that when family is around, everything is okay.
Watch it with your favourite comfort food, maybe a bowl of rajma chawal?
