Shoojit Sircar’s Gulabo Sitabo, a comedy based on folklore has seen several changes with regards to its release date and there’s likely to be another one. With Coronavirus Pandemic resulting in lockdowns, theatrical releases of films have been pushed and in some cases filmmakers have contemplated taking the digital route. This Amitabh Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana film is possibly eyeing the latter – an OTT release as opposed to a delayed theatrical release. Had everything gone as per plan, Gulabo Sitabo would have been in theatres on April 17.

Shoojit Sircar who had worked with Big B and Ayushmann in another film (Shoebite ) that could not be completed due to various reasons, would have very much liked a theatrical release but under the current circumstances he is left with some important decisions to make. Speaking to Mumbai Mirror, the filmmaker let in, “As a filmmaker, I’d want to see my film open in the theatres, but the situation today is unlike anything anyone had ever experienced. So, I’m open to a digital release if need be, but we will take a decision after May 3." Shoojit also talks about movie buffs becoming increasingly welcoming of the idea of home entertainment. He anticipates in the times to come only a segment of the audience will possibly flock to cinemas. He says, “The others will invest in a bigger and better TV or a home theatre. In this scenario, cost correction in film budgets and a cap on the price of film tickets is imperative. By then, people will have got into the habit of not spending much and saving for another calamity, so, it’s important to bring down inflated costs.”
