It was a powerful night for women at the Emmys this morning when an underdog show stole the limelight. Prime Video’s Fleabag has been one of the most underrated shows of recent time. Written by Phoebe Waller Bridge who also plays the lead character of the show, not only is it a laugh riot but it’s one of those shows which teaches you a thing or two about family and relationships.
Probably one of the finest coming-of-age series out there, Fleabag shines with a stellar cast, excellent direction and the biggest star of all, impeccable writing. Each moment is a joy and each scene is magnetically charged with emotion. Fleabag is the story of a woman in her twenties (Phoebe Waller Bridge) who is grieving the death of her best friend while she navigates her adult life. Added to that is her dysfunctional family, especially her eccentric stepmother (played by the talented Olivia Colman), her business which is in shambles and a sizzling romance with an attractive priest (Andrew Scott)
You want to hate Fleabag because she is a no-holds barred, highly inappropriate character but as each episode goes by, you end up falling in love with her. It’s a character we’ve never seen before on screen, someone so flawed yet so relatable. Some scenes in particular stay with you for long and have tremendous re-watch value. The romance between Fleabag and the priest in particular is highly enjoyable.
Fleabag is an important show because not only is it fun, it also is a landmark for how far female representation on screen has come. The talents of Phoebe Waller Bridge are many and you cannot decide whether she is a better writer or actor. This is truly revolutionary television and it is heartening to see it getting the acclaim it deserves on a world stage as prestigious as the Emmys.
Both seasons of Fleabag are now streaming on Amazon Prime Video
