The trailer for Netflix’s The Laundromat is designed to grab eyeballs. Starring Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, Meryl Streep and snippets of many more like David Schwimmer and Sharon Stone, this one is as star-studded as it gets. The film is also directed by the maestro, Steven Soderbergh of Oceans Eleven  and Erin Brokovich fame.

The film is based on a book which investigates the Panama papers incident. For those unfamiliar with what happened, here’s a quick recap. In 2016, some hidden documents were uncovered which led to a great financial expose. It exposed some of the biggest names in the banking, legal and government sectors all over the world who were hiding their wealth in shell companies all over the world to avoid taxation. It stirred up the world with names cropping up in every corner of the world.

Reminiscent of the film The Big Short, The Laundromat investigates these gaps in the system through its lead characters. For instance, Oldman and Banderas play partners at the law firm that is at the heart of the controversy. Streep’s character on the other hand is one of a grieving widow trying to gain her insurance claims.

The trailer has already gained a lot of appreciation by the sheer weight of the names associated with it and the controversial issue it is based on. Time will tell whether The Laundromat lives up to the hype that has been created. Will Meryl Streep steal the show yet again? Will the film take on a far more complex issue than can be adapted on screen? We will get these answers soon.

The Laundromat will be streaming on Netflix on October 18th.
