Before the days of Netflix and Prime Video blowing up the way it has, creators had one place to put their content – Youtube. Good news is, some of these Indian web series are really, really good and best of all – absolutely free. You might have to struggle with a few ads here and there, but it is completely worth it. Contrary to popular belief, this was the inception of homegrown digital content and not Sacred Games. We present to you a list of must-watch shows on Youtube. Some of them are the first to hit the scene and some are more recent, but all of them are praise-worthy.
1. Bang Baaja Baarat
Y-Films, the digital division of Yash Raj Films, has actually produced a couple of really good web shows but they really set the landscape with Bang Baaja Baarat. When it released in 2015, it was all anybody could talk about. The show is about a couple who want to tie the knot, but when the families get involved, all hell breaks loose. One episode of this show also got a whopping 13 million views!
2. Man’s World
Another Y-Films original, this one boasts of an impressive star cast. Starring Kalki Koechlin, Parineeti Chopra, Richa Chadha among others. The show also has a very interesting premise. It is about a world where men and women have interchanged roles. Highly binge-able with great performances, don’t miss this one!
3. Official Chukyagiri
Arre’s show Official Chukyagiri is a relatable take on life in Mumbai. To pursue an internship, a boy from Meerut named Spandan makes his way to Mumbai. He struggles with workplace politics, his love life and the fast pace of the city. Starring Mithila Palkar and Sumeet Vyas among others, this one is a must-watch. Also watch the sequel called Official CEOgiri.
4. The Trip
The ultimate girl bonding show, Bindaas’ The Trip has two stellar seasons. Starring some of our favourite women, Lisa Haydon, Sapna Pabbi, Shweta Tripathi and Mallika Dua, we follow these girls as they take some of the most important trips of their lives – each ending up being a life lesson. The best part? How much they end up relying on each other and their friendship!
5. What The Folks
Another two season show, Dice Media’s What The Folks deals with the lives of an ordinary couple with not-so-ordinary in laws. Not just a story about relationships, What The Folks also offers a take on generation gap and how we must learn to love our parents. Truly heart-warming, this one left us wanting more! What’s more – Veer Singh and Eisha Chopra look great together and have great chemistry!
