Oscars 2020: Chris Rock-Steve Martin Roast The Academy For Lack Of Female Directors In Nominations, ‘Vaginas Are Missing’
Former Oscar hosts and comedians Chris Rock and Steve Martin took a dig at the Oscars for their lack of diversity. In their opening monologue, they addressed the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category, as well as black nominees
The 2020 Oscars took place recently at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and saw the who’s who of Hollywood come together under one roof for one of the most prestigious award ceremony. Celebs such as Janelle Monae, Brie Larson, Scarlett Johansson, Renee Zellweger, Kim Kardashian and more put their most fashionable foot forward and looked stunning. The highlight of the night was the South Korean movie Parasite bagging the Best Picture Award at the Oscars 2020, making history as the first non-English film to win this coveted award.
While the 92nd Academy Awards was hostless once again for the second time in a row, former Oscar hosts comedians Chris Rock and Steve Martin gave a hilarious opening monologue, while also simultaneously taking a dig at the Oscars for their lack of diversity. They addressed the lack of female nominees in the Best Director category, as well as black nominees. Chris Rock said, “There’s so many great directors nominated this year.” Steve Martin replied, “I don’t know, Chris, I thought there was something missing from the list this year.” Chris Rock instantly replied, “Vaginas?” leaving the audience in splits.
Further addressing the lack of black nominees, Chris Rock said, “Cynthia did such a great job in Harriet hiding black people that the Academy got her to hide all the black nominees. Cynthia, is Eddie Murphy under this stage?” This year at Oscars 2020, all five of the nominated directors were male, while 19 out of 20 acting nominees were white.
