After a long wait, the verdict on veteran Hollywood filmmaker Harvey Weinstein, who was accused of several charges, including rape, sexual assault and molestation, is out. On February 24, a jury of 12 men and women found the former movie mogul guilty on two out of the five charges that he faced in his New York Country trial. Harvey Weinstein has been convicted of criminal sexual assault in the first degree, following the testimony of Miriam Haley and rape in the third degree, based on the testimony of Jessica Mann. The verdict was out after the jury spent five days into consideration and discussion.

The conclusion on Harvey Weinstein’s case was announced amid a packed courtroom with around 100 people in attendance. The accused, who attended the trial in a walker, was guarded by several police officers. As soon as the verdict was out, people called it a small but valuable victory in the history of #MeToo. Soon after, several Hollywood celebrities, including those who accused the Oscar-winning filmmaker of sexual harassment and rape, welcomed the court’s decision with open hands and hailed it as ‘a new era of justice’.  The list includes Ashley Judd, Reese Witherspoon, Padma Lakshmi, Mira Sorvino, Ellen Barkin and Asia Argento among others.

Survivor Ashley Judd tweeted, “For the women who testified in this case and walked through traumatic hell, you did a public service to girls and women everywhere, thank you. I am. Thank you. I am thinking about how it took 90 women coming forward for two guilty convictions,” While Padma Lakshmi wrote, “Harvey Weinstein is now a convicted rapist. If there's a man who doesn't deserve bail, it's him.”

Survivor Asia Argento shared, “Harvey Weinstein is now a convicted rapist. Two survivors cry and and celebrate. Thank you, God. Thank you to all the brave women. Thank you to the judge and jury in NYC — @samyliscious — this one goes out to you Anthony.”

The filmmaker will be sentenced on March 11. It was in October 2017 that Hollywood got its #MeToo movement after more than 80 women came forward and accused Harvey.
