Amber Heard has settled her defamation case against Johnny Depp after much deliberation. The Aquaman actress has finally decided to get candid about her defamation case which was filed by her ex-husband. Taking to her Instagram post on Monday, she asserted that settling the case was “very difficult” and maintained that she feels it is the right thing to do, “after a great deal of deliberation”.
Amber claimed to have braved the domestic violence throughout their marriage and she lashed out at being re-victimized on coming forward for the abuse.
"It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I have faced on social media is an amplified version of the ways in which women are re-victimized when they come forward," Heard wrote further.
As per a DailyMail report, the former couple’s lawyers have reached a deal that will see Heard’s insurance company pay Depp $1 million.
Meanwhile, In her statement, Amber Heard claimed that the settlement is the last resort and characterized it as "an opportunity to emancipate myself from something I attempted to leave over six years ago and on terms I can agree to." She added, "I have made no admission. This is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or gags with respect to my voice moving forward.”
However, the actress lost the court battle on June 1 in the Fairfax County case and the verdict awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. She was awarded $2 million in compensatory damages which was later slashed down to $350,000 to comply with a statutory cap, but nothing in punitive damages as per NBC reports.
