It’s been 14 years since the first Bourne film hit theatres. And, this Friday, the fifth instalment in the franchise, Jason Bourne, will be out. The film has franchise star Matt Damon in the title role. Here’s our complete review of the film.
The world is always at war and this time, the daggers are pointed at the US Government. A rogue agent, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) sends the CIA into a tizzy when she downloads all information related to the black operations. Somehow, this connects to Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), who’s quite happy punching people somewhere in the desert.
Unfortunately, Nicky finds out something about Bourne’s past that make him go out, seeking answers. This brings him in direct conflict with the current CIA director, Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) and Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), a CIA agent who has an agenda of her own. And then there’s the assassin, known only as the Asset (Vincent Cassel), whose personal and professional agenda is to do away with Jason once and for all.

Jason Bourne is a good political-thriller and a nice addition to the franchise. After more than a decade as Bourne, Matt Damon is at ease playing the character. What creates an immediate interest in the film is its script. The agent-vs-agent brouhaha is laced with newer, more controversial aspects like companies being funded by governments to do their dirty work, digital security and privacy, and other such things.
That said, this film is not for those looking for people blowing up buildings, saving damsels in distress and flying away from islands. Jason Bourne is a solid, old-school thriller and that’s that. The action sequences are few and far between and they certainly won’t make it into any of the ‘best action scenes’ lists.
Director Paul Greengrass uses the now common shaky camera trope to bring an urgency and reality to the film. The chase sequences are shot beautifully. Greengrass’ direction takes the film a few notches higher. Even the longish climax keeps the audience totally engrossed.
Jason Bourne will please fans of the franchise and is a must watch for everyone interested in a solid spy-film. This one is an edge-of-the-seat thriller all the way down.
