Deepika Padukone As Rani Padmini Or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan As Jodhaa Bai?

Padmavati trailer is out and we can’t help but draw a comparison between Bollywood’s two Rajput queens- Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa (2008), which was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Rani Padmini played by Deepika Padukone (2017) - who’s your pick?

Period films are a big hit in Bollywood. And interestingly one of the most important aspects about these films are the costumes donned by the leads actors.

With Padmavati’s trailer being out, here’s a much-obvious comparison of Deepika Padukone’s look in Padmavati with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s in Jodhaa Akbar.

While Deepika plays Chittorgarh’s queen Rani Padmini, Aishwarya also played the character of a Rajput queen- Jodhaa Bai, who gets married to Mughal emperor, Akbar.

Deepika As Rani Padmini & Aishwarya As Jodha

Considering they both play Rajput queens from the same belt, their looks ought to be similar. The heavy chokers, zardosi lehengas and organic textures are the key ingredients of a Rajputana costume. But who pulled the look better- Deepika or Aishwarya?

In my opinion, Deepika’s look is far more authentic and closer to the time it belongs to. Aishwarya’s look was customized and made a bit commercial for obvious reasons. The skin show and deep cut blouses used for Jodhaa’s character were something which the history doesn’t agree to.

A closer look and you will see the way Deepika has draped her dupatta is as close it can get. No skin show, covered back and long sleeves with elaborate cummerbunds- Sanjay Leela Bhansali has paid a lot of attention to the authenticity of the look.

Deepika Padukone & Aishawarya Rai

If we talk about the jewellery, then both Aishwarya and Deepika are giving a tough competition in this department. The use of stones and designs is as intricate in Deepika’s case as it was in Aishwarya’s. Both have worn beautiful baju bandhs and rajwadi rakhdis. However, there was more usage of polki work in Aishwarya’s jewellery as compared to Deepika.

Coming to their make-up and hair-dos, Deepika and Aishwarya- both opted for nude base but thick kajal, liner and dark lip colours. In context to their hair styles, Deepika is seen sporting braids and pleated hair-dos like a Rajput queen did during those times as compared to Aishwarya, who most of the times loosely tied her hair in Jodhaa Akbar.

A brownie point here goes to Deepika for sporting the uni-brow, just to look as similar as she can to Rani Padmini. It's is the first time she has attempted this look and I must say that Deepika is pulling it off quite well.

On a concluding note, Aishwarya does look prettier as a Rajput queen than Deepika but if authenticity is the parameter to judge then Deepika Padukone nails the look more precisely.
