Student Of The Year 2, Movie Review: Ananya Panday Tops, Tiger Shroff And Tara Sutaria Come A Close Second

SOTY 2 has its fair share of predictability and twists. It's a package you certainly won't mind. Ananya Panday is brilliant. Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria are not far behind. What is undesirable is that the film loses its way a bit as it heads towards the climax

Planning to see Student Of The Year 2? Go for it. You won't get bored. The film starts off on a peppermint note until the triangle between Tara Sutaria-Tiger Shroff-Ananya Panday is firmly formed, but after that, it has its fair share of twists, turns and predictability too, but I wasn't tempted to browse through my WhatsApp during its run and I think I have told you if it's sufficiently engaging in totality or not.

So yeah, SOTY 2 works. It works, first because of Ananya Panday. Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan have competition. This leggy lass is confidence personified. Chunky and Bhavna's daughter comes out with flying colours. It then works because of Tara Sutaria, who is good but sadly her performance is not very consistent. The girl lacks depth in some of the scenes, especially those when she wards off Tiger in the first half and then again in the second. Also, her role is not well written in terms of her actions to convince you about her decisions. Fair if we don't form an opinion about anyone in his/her first film. But one thing is clear, both Tara and Ananya are here to stay. They will get many more opportunities and let's wait for few of those before we pass a judgment on them.

And it works because of Tiger Shroff's USP, who in his most challenging role till date, is fine. But Punit Malhotra (director) doesn't seem to come out from Tiger's Flying Jatt image and consequently leaves the boy lesser scope to emote, not that Jackie and Ayesha's son could not have added a little more josh on his own. Still, Tiger manages to hold center stage with his dance and action.

Moving on, Alia Bhatt's hook-up song should have been weaved in the narrative. Will Smith makes a blink-and-miss appearance. Farah Khan is her usual animated self. But these three components are definitely entertaining. The Dharma Productions sheen does not wear off till the end. And, Gul Panag's cameo makes you wonder why this talented lady is hardly seen in movies. But what is undesirable is that the film loses its way towards the last 30 minutes or so. The rivalry between Aditya Seal (a sight for the sore eyes) and Tiger should have been etched out strongly. Consequently, the emotion of anger and revenge does not form enough. This, in turn, makes the entire competition in the end which decides who's the Student Of The Year (no prizes for guessing who wins that) too long, yet ironically too hurried.

All said and done, Student Of The Year 2 is your typical Popcorn-Pepsi film where you might not feel the hole in your pocket this combo usually drills.
