Zoya Hussain made an impressive debut in 2017 with Mukkabaaz opposite Vineet Kumar Singh, where she played a mute girl who falls in love with an aspiring boxer working at her home. Recently, the actress was seen as the upright IPS officer, Amrita Singh, who unravels past stories about her father during an investigation, in the Disney+ Hotstar series, Grahan. The show has been garnering praise for its story and its cast.

In between these two projects, Zoya was seen in two more movies, the 2019 action-drama film, Laal Kaptaan helmed by Navdeep Singh with Saif Ali Khan in the lead, followed by the trilingual film Kaadan which released in Tamil with this name, in Telugu as Aranya and is still awaiting release in Hindi as Haathi mere Saathi. The film also features Rana Daggubati, Vishnu Vishal, Pulkit Samrat and Shriya Pilgaonkar. Although both of them were highly anticipated projects, they did not create much impact on their release. Laal Kaptaan proved to be a disaster on its opening with even critics failing to comprehend its experimental subject. However, it still remains close to Zoya’s heart. “Laal Kaptaan is a very special film for me because I adore Navdeep Singh as a person, filmmaker and I hope to do more work with him. But people did not click with it,” she says.

Zoya insists that she had an absolutely wonderful time shooting for the film. “I had the time of my life shooting for it. I had wonderful co-actors, director, cinematographer and everyone from that shoot have become very good friends. I feel sad that people didn’t like Laal Kaptaan but it was a very special film to me. However, ever since the film came on Amazon Prime, it is being watched even today,” she states.
