Ever since the remake of Sridevi-Kamal Haasan starrer Sadma
(1983) was announced, buzz around its star cast has been doing the rounds.
Ad-filmmaker Lloyd Baptista, who is making his directorial debut with the
project, had earlier confessed that Kareena Kapoor was approached to reprise
Sridevi’s role in the film, but she couldn’t do it as she was busy with Ki
& Ka at the time. Now, SpotboyE.com has learnt that Alia Bhatt and
Parineeti Chopra have been approached for the film. The screen tests are scheduled
some time soon.
Says a source, “Lloyd is in India for a few days to finalise
the cast of Sadma remake and the biopic on entrepreneur Kalpana Saroj. He will
do the screen test of both Alia and Parineeti before taking a call.”
It remains to be seen which actress finally makes it.
Sadma, directed by Balu Mahendra featured Sridevi and Kamal
Haasan in lead roles. The film tells the tale of Nehalata (Sridevi), a young
woman who regresses to childhood after suffering a head injury in a car crash.
Lost, she ends up trapped in a brothel before being rescued by Somu (Kamal
Haasan), a lonely school teacher who falls in love with her.
The film is a remake of the 1982 of Balu Mahendra's own
Tamil film Moondram Pirai, starring Sridevi and Kamal Hassan. Sridevi's
autistic child-woman performance was widely praised and is considered one of
the finest performances of her career. It brought her nominations in the
Filmfare Best Actress Award category as well as State and National Awards.
Kamal's performance in the film won him the National Award in the Tamil
original. The film flopped at the box-office, but achieved cult status courtesy
the performances.
