It was a sad statement of Vidya Balan's style at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival in 2013. She was dressed and styled by Sabyasachi Mukherjee, the designer who has a passion for muses from Bollywood - Rani Mukerji, Kalki Koechlin, Vidya... you get the idea - but failed to set the fashion registers ringing. Critics called her 'matronly' and 'stuck in a style rut', and her too-rounded figure did not help matters. It was after all an event that rates high on the style scene and we expected more from the super-actress, even with her distinctly Indian preferences. She insisted that people she met there, be it Nicole Kidman or Ang Lee, loved her clothes and that she was very happy with the looks Sabya had curated for her.
But obviously there was some fallout of that expedition.
Vidya no longer extols her former designer's creations, and Sabya no longer seems to consider the actress his muse.
The rift showed clearly at Lakme Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015's first show - an offsite by Sabya, in which Kalki, Deepika Padukone and other B-town luminaries were in attendance.
There was no sign of Vidya, who was said to be at a promo event in Pune, which made our antennae stand up. And our suspicions found proof when she showed up on the ramp as showstopper for designer Gaurang Shah yesterday at the Palladium Hotel in Mumbai, wearing a traditional sari with heavy gold jewellery.
Shift in loyalties, VB?
