The Bombay High Court has adjourned the hearing in the Udta Punjab vs Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) case till Monday.
During the hearing which started a short while ago, the court came down heavily upon the Censor Board for demanding multiple cuts in the film, including all references to ‘Punjab’.
“ Whether it is TV or cinema, let the people see it. Everybody has a choice,” the HC told CBFC.
On its part, the Censor Board expressed severe reservations against the word ‘Kanjar’ used in the film. It also objected to a dog in the movie being called ‘Jackie Chan’.
“Films don’t run on such content, there has to be a story in it, why are you concerned? Multiplex audience are mature enough. All this is giving unnecessary publicity to the film,” A bench headed by Justice C.S. Dharmadhikari noted.
The defendant lawyer, meanwhile, pointed out that earlier, films with titles such as Delhi Belly, Bandit Queen and Gangs of Wasseypur had been passed. “We have offered disclaimers in three parts to the effect that movie doesn’t put any state in bad light,” the advocate added.
