After pushing the release of her ambitious project, Thalaivii, a few times due to the Covid pandemic, Kangana Ranaut finally arrived as J Jayalalithaa on the silver screen this Friday. The biopic of the actress turned politician Jayalalithaa, who served as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu for more than 14 years between 1991 and 2016, opened to a mixed response from the critics but kind of underperformed at the Box Office.
According to boxofficeindia.com, the all-India collection for Thalaivii on the first day, i.e. Friday, is Rs 1.25 crore. Their report suggested that the film had a low opening day in the Hindi market as it grossed around 20-25 lakhs net on day 1. The film also faced another challenge there as the Hindi version didn’t get a release in the national chains due to the conflict between the chain owners and the film’s producers owing to the reduced two-week gap between the film’s theatrical and OTT release.
The business of the film was better in Tamil Nadu and it collected in the range of Rs 80 lakh net. The film faced stiff competition from Telugu film Seetimarr - which prevented it from doing much in Andhra Pradesh as the local film ruled the market.
Helmed by AL Vijay, Thalaivii also stars Arvind Swami as MG Ramachandran in the lead, along with Nassar, Bhagyashree, Raj Arjun, Madhoo, Jisshu Sengupta, Thambi Ramaiah, Shamna Kasim and Samutharikani. The film has been shot simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil. According to latest reports, the film’s business picked up considerably on the second day.
