Sushmita Sen was the first Indian to bring home the title of Miss Universe followed by the likes of Yukta Mookhey, actress Lara Dutta, and most recently, Harnaaz Sandhu. Her big win at the pageant, 28 years ago not only earned her a successful career in Bollywood but also made the entire nation super proud. In a recent interview, Sushmita took a stroll down memory lane and recalled winning the Miss Universe crown in 1994. She revisited the time when she had answered a final question and made a shocking disclosure regarding the same.
In an interview with her daughter Alisah's school magazine, the actress was asked if today she would like to change anything about the answer she gave to the final question she was asked at the pageant. The Arya actress pointed out that what she loved the most about the question was they never asked her what are the qualities of a woman or the attributes of a woman. The jury asked her what is the essence of a woman. “And I was from a Hindi medium school, so I did not know that much English back in the day. I don't know how I understood what essence meant and answered that question with such clarity and such experience, even though I lacked it 18, I think God sat on my tongue and said, let this be said because this is how you will choose to live your life. I stated that being born a woman is a great gift of God. I stand by that. Nothing has changed on that front,” Sushmita was quoted saying.
For the unversed, in the final round, Sushmita was asked, "What for you is the essence of being a woman?” In her answer, she had said, “Just being a woman is a gift of God that all of us must appreciate. The origin of a child is a mother, who is a woman. She shows a man what caring, sharing and loving is all about. That’s the essence of being a woman.”
