Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, welcomed him into the fold and said, “I am pleased to welcome a firebrand actor, popular, very committed to his art, young brave artist Sunny Deol to the BJP.” Adding further, Sitharaman said, “Sunny Deol made the film Border which showed how the feeling of nationalism and patriotism when portrayed beautifully on film can touch a cord with the people.”

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also welcomed the actor-turned-politician and said, “It cannot be acting when it comes from the heart.” Goyal recalled how Sunny Deol’s father, veteran actor Dharmendra had agreed to contest from Bikaner in 2004 in spite of being unwell at that time. The actor had even won handsomely.
Sunny is the third member from the Deol family to step into politics after Dharmendra and Hema Malini. His father had represented the Bikaner Lok Sabha seat from 2004 to 2009 whereas Hema Malini is a BJP MP from Mathura. The senior actress is seeking a re-election from the same constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
There were speculations of Sunny Deol joining politics since last week as a picture of the actor with BJP chief Amit Shah in Pune had made its way on the web. Deol had then said, “I heard about the rumours that I am joining politics. I just met him (Amit Shah) and we took a photograph, that's it.” The actor is known for his action hero roles in movies like Ghayal, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Damini and Border, to name a few.
