After years of struggle and making a successful switch from TV to films at the peak of his popularity on the small screen, Sharad Kelkar has finally made a mark for himself as a distinguished artist. After giving impressive performances in the past in films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, and being the voice of Baahubali in the Hindi dubbed version of both the films in the Baahubali franchise, last year was Sharad’s year.
The actor started 2020 with an impressive and strong performance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Ajay Devgn’s period film Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero, and ended the year with the brief yet unanimously and highly applauded performance as Laxmii, a transgender woman, in Akshay Kumar and Kiara Advani’s Laxmii. This year he is currently enjoying the success of The Family Man 2 and also earlier this year, Sharad finally announced his first film as a leading hero, titled Déjà Vu, directed by Abhijeet Warang of National Award-winning Picasso fame. The thriller will have a single character at a single location, while the remaining characters will only have voiceovers. Talking about the film, Sharad says, “Déjà Vu is a very interesting storyline that connects in today’s life. It’s a very trippy psychological thriller. I saw the first cut and it didn’t feel like my 90 minutes had gone. It’s quite gripping with fantastic camera work and background score. I have a lot of faith in that film.”
Ask Sharad if the makers will wait for a theatrical release or take the OTT route for the film, and he says, “With the scenario that is today, we all know that once theatres reopen at full capacity, all big films will release. So, I don’t want my film to get lost or suppressed in that. It’s better to either wait for the right time or go for an OTT release.”
