Shahid Kapoor's marriage to Delhi-based Mira Rajput has been the biggest Bollywood event of the year so far. After being in the news for his love affairs over the years, the actor threw everyone off-guard by opting for an arranged marriage.

Talking exclusively to SpotboyE this afternoon, Shahid said, "Frankly, I was petrified about marriage. This was mainly because I understood the seriousness of it. I think people should be aware that with marriage, you are signing up for a long-term commitment which requires you to believe in it for the concept to work. After all, that person is going to be with you for the rest of your life."

Shahid is well aware that one needs to put in a lot of efforts to make a marriage work. "Over time, people evolve and you discover things about each other, which you may like or not like. But that doesn't mean you give up and walk away on something as fundamental and natural as marriage," he added.

Does he feel that marrying young is better as opposed to finding someone in their mid-thirties? "I have seen some people getting married really young and that has worked for them. Some of them have married much late in life which didn't work out," he explained.

Shahid's parents' marriage did not work; Pankaj Kapur separated from his first wife Neelima Azeem to marry Supriya Pathak while Neelima, Shahid's biological mother, went on to marry twice over.

The Haider actor believes the success of a marriage depends on how badly the couple wants to make it work. He reasoned, "People give up on marriage because they don't try hard enough to actually make the relationship work. The longer you stay alone, the harder it is to share your life with someone. And by life, I mean everything - your house, your likes, your dislikes, all of it."
