Noted criminal lawyer Shrikant Shivade, who had handled high-profile cases involving Bollywood celebs Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Shiney Ahuja, passed away in Pune on Wednesday. He breathed his last at a private hospital. One of the junior lawyers working for him confirmed the news and shared that the lawyer died of leukemia (blood cancer). He was 67.

Clinical hematologist Dr Sameer Melinkeri was treating Advocate Shivade as revealed by a representative of the private hospital where he was undergoing treatment for cancer.

A law graduate from the Indian Law Society, Shrikant Shivade represented accused in many high-profile cases including Salman Khan and other stars in the hit-and-run case, Tyagi in 2G scam, Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit in the Malegaon bomb blast case, Shiney Ahuja in sexual assault case, Deepak Kulkarni in fraud case among others.

Senior counsel Shirish Gupte, himself a noted criminal law counsel, told TOI, "Shivade was a self-made man. He excelled in cross-examinations and was very soft-spoken."

Speaking to TOI, Senior counsel Ashok Mundargi remembered Shivade and said, "Shivade came from a non-lawyer background, but become one of the best cross-examiners among trial lawyers of our time. He was always mild-mannered in court. His demise is a loss to the legal fratenity." Senior counsel Amit Desai said, "Shivade was one of the few trail lawyers in the old mould of Ram Jethmalani, P R Vakil and my father Krishnakant Desai, an outstanding trial lawyer. He is a deep loss to the trial cross bar."
