After receiving flak for his appearance in AIB Roast earlier this year, Ranveer Singh is in the middle of a controversy once again. This time around, he has been criticised for his recent commercial for the underwear brand, Rupa.
In the commercial, the Gunday actor is seen diving into the sea to save a girl from a shark. He is later seen beating the shark in order to impress the girl.
PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) has objected to the cruel behaviour shown towards the animal.
Reacting to this, Mr. Mukesh Agarwal, Whole-time Director, Rupa & Co. Ltd. and spokesperson for the Brand, issued a statement: “This is to clarify that the shark shown in the latest Rupa commercial featuring Ranveer Singh is a rubber toy, no animal was used in the shoot. It is not our intention to hurt anyone’s sentiment. We will be adding a disclaimer to the ad to this effect.”
However, Poorva Joshipura from PETA has sent a letter to BCCC (Broadcasting Content Complaints Council) and The Advertising Standards Council of India, condemning the ad. The letter states that while the shark used is not real, the advertisement condones cruelty to animals and provides a false and dangerous impression of sharks who are already facing threat.
