The much talked about biopic of Sanjay Dutt has finally gone on floors with a cake-cutting ceremony (FINALLY! Sanjay Dutt biopic starring Ranbir to roll in
January, Jul 27, 2016).
Actress Dia Mirza shared this picture from last night where the team cut a cake in the presence of director Rajkumar Hirani and the leading man of the biopic, Ranbir Kapoor.
We were the first to tell you that Raman Raghav 2.0 actor Vicky Kaushal will play Sanjay’s best friend in the film (Guess Who Will Play Sanjay Dutt's Close Friend In Ranbir Kapoor Starrer Biopic?, Nov 24, 2016) and he too was a part of the celebration.

Hirani too, shared his excitement with this tweet:
First shot taken now for Sanjay Dutt's biopic. Canning a very funny scene. Excitement in cast and crew.

Hirani had approached Ranbir in November 2014 for the biopic. An excited Ranbir instantly gave his nod to the film. However, the script had to be rewritten several times and was finally shown to Sanjay upon his release from prison in February last year.
With Sanjay having given it a thumbs-up, the project was supposed to go on floors in June (Ranbir To Start Dutt Biopic In June, Dec 20, 2016). In fact, RK was so keen on bringing Dutt’s character alive on screen that he even bowed out of the Kishore Kumar biopic.
However, Hirani’s film hit a few more roadblocks and was postponed to August – Ranbir even started beefing up for the role with Sanjay himself giving him workout tips (Sanjay Dutt readies Ranbir Kapoor for his biopic, Mar 23, 2016).
And then suddenly, Sanjay publicly questioned Ranbir's ability to play him in his biopic and revealed that he has been ignoring the Kapoor scion’s attempts to reach out to him. (Ouch! Has Sanjay Dutt Hurt Ranbir Kapoor?, Dec 17, 2016).
When asked about his response to Ranbir stepping into his shoes for the big screen, Sanjay had reportedly replied: "My life might be interesting, that’s why a director like Hirani liked it. Ranbir is playing me, but his condition is quite bad. He calls me every day. He wants to spend days and weeks with me, but I can't spend more than half an hour with anybody. I have been trying to avoid him, it is a difficult role for him to play."
Hirani meanwhile has painstakingly put together an ensemble cast including Sonam Kapoor, who will play Ranbir's love interest. (SCOOP: Sonam & Ranbir Back As Lovers?, Nov 23, 2016)
Though there has been no official announcement about who will play Sanjay’s father, acting legend Sunil Dutt, buzz is Akshaye Khanna has bagged the role. Jackie Shroff too was in the running for the part but Akshaye seems to have trumped him.
