In 2017, there were speculations around Ranbir Kapoor and Mahira Khan's on/off relationship. The fuel was added when they were spotted together in New York for a quick smoke. Post that, Mahira was trolled for smoking and wearing a short dress and the Kapoor lad stood by her side asking the trollers to back off. In a statement, he had said, "I've gotten to know Mahira in a personal capacity over the last few months. She is somebody who I admire and respect, for her achievements and even more for the person she is. It is very unfair the way she is being judged and spoken about. What is also sad is the inequality in judgment just because she is a woman."
Everything was going great between the two, until Alia Bhatt entered Ranbir’s life during the filming of Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra in 2018.
Her blossoming romance with RK Junior affected Mahira and by the end of 2017, they called it quits. However, several business tycoons had already cast their eyes on Ranbir and Mahira back then and the ad world wanted to cash in on this fresh pairing.
One of the tycoons who was planning to launch his product in the Indian market, went and approached Mahira and Ranbir to appear together for a detergent brand. The duo took time to think and even gave their nod. So as per the plan, RK and Mahira were set to shoot for the commercial in mid 2018. Unfortunately, the tycoon who was keen on casting them was shocked to know that the couple has broken up even before he could showcase this unusual jodi onscreen for the first time. And the launch got delayed, as Mahira asked sometime to get back in her zone where Ranbir's presence would not matter to her. The business tycoon agreed to this.
In December 2018, finally Mahira was fine to work with RK as per her commitment and the trio fixed to shoot a commercial in March 2019. However, in the wake of Pulwama terror attack, All India Cine Workers Association announced a total ban on Pakistani actors and once again, the product launch was put on hold.
Finally, the tycoon has compromised on Mahira and asked Ranbir Kapoor to be the face of his soon-to-be launched detergent powder face. A new model has replaced Mahira Khan opposite Ranbir in the commercial and the actor has shot for the advertisement some days at Mehboob Studio, Bandra.
