Priyanka Chopra's Bengali Film Gets The Chop Before Release; Intimate Scenes Edited Out

Priyanka Chopra's Bengali production Nalini has been a hot topic of discussion for some time now. The film shows the romantic side of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who was said to be in love with his tutor Annapurna Turkhud. However, Visva Bharati University, who are custodians of Rabindranath Tagore's legacy, objected to the intimate scenes in the film.
 
Finally, at the behest of the university, National Film Award winning director Ujjwal Chatterjee decided to chop those intimate scenes from the movie.

“I have agreed with Visva Bharati University’s recommendations on removing intimate scenes. I am removing one scene. There are no problems regarding the decisions of the committee formed by the varsity to look into the authenticity of research. The shooting will commence in November this year, and will take place in Shantiniketan, Jorasanko and Maharashtra,” Chatterjee said.

Annapurna was the daughter of Atmaram Pandurang Turkhud, a Mumbai-based doctor. Tagore had stayed with the family prior to his first voyage to Britain in 1878 and took lessons in English speaking from Annapurna. He gave her the nickname Nalini, which Annapurna later used as a pseudonym for her writing. She inspired some of Tagore’s early poetic expressions. Tagore never forgot about Annapurna and used to reminisce about her in his old age.

The trilingual film Nalini, will portray the platonic relationship between Tagore and Annapurna. The film is being produced by Priyanka Chopra's production house Purple Pebble Pictures.
 
Well, now that there has been a bit of self- censoring, it will be interesting to see how the Censor Board treats the film. Will it get more cuts considering it's a sensitive issue? Only time will tell.
