Actress Mouni Roy rose to fame after essaying the role of Krishna Tulsi Virani in Smriti Irani’s famous show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. At the age of 19, she became a household name because of her versatile performance. She went on to become everyone’s favourite after her portrayal of Sati in Devon Ke Dev... Mahadev and Ekta Kapoor’s famous fantasy-franchise serial Naagin. She also made her debut in Bollywood and stole the limelight with her antagonist portrayal in Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer Brahmastra: Part One-Shiva. Having achieved so much fame and recognition, over the years, her initial years in the entertainment industry were brutal.
During an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Mouni spoke about how she was brutally body-shamed behind her back when she was 19, and how it negatively impacted her. Opening up about the harsh criticism she faced back then for not looking like a “quintessential heroine,” she said that she used to cry a lot after hearing such words. She revealed how she received a humble upbringing after her birth in Cooch Behar, West Bengal, and always knew she didn’t have gorgeous looks. Quoted by Bollywood Shaadis, she said, “I'll be very honest when I started and people used to talk, I’ve always heard, always known I’m not the best looking person in a room. And I’ve always been okay with it. Speaking about the impact the treatment had on her, she expressed gratitude towards her observant nature. The 38-year-old actress shared, “I’ve understood all that (being a quintessential heroine) now, but as a young girl of 19, it was very difficult. I used to cry a lot. I’ve overheard people in a room talking about me. My first 2-3 years in terms of how I looked or felt. I never… When I came here, suddenly it was I didn’t know anything about hair or makeup or how to present myself. But thankfully I was very observant and God gave me the wisdom to finally overcome it.”
On the work front, Mouni Roy was last seen in John Abraham and Sharvari starrer Vedaa’s song ‘Mummy Ji’. She showed her acting prowess in Emraan Hashmi starrer web series ‘Showtime’. Streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, the actress essayed the role of Yasmine Ali. If reports are to be believed, she has currently finished filming for The वरGIN Tree, opposite Sunny Singh. The makers are yet to announce updates about the project.
