Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar is one of the most sassiest yet blunt celebrities in the entertainment industry. He often comes under the radar for his fashion sense and the movies his production house, Dharma Productions, produces.
With films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Student Of The Year to his credit, Johar claims that people have a preconceived notion about the type of films he makes. Even after making movies that were unique and different from his normal genre, they had to heavily market the movie in order to break that perception. The filmmaker recently attended the trailer launch of his upcoming movie, Govinda Mera Naam, where he revealed that he rarely gets a good and innovative script because of Dharma’s perception. He shared, "Anything new rarely comes to me because everyone has a perception of what we make. No matter how much we have broken that myth with our films, every time we have made a different film, we have to scream from the rooftops that we have made a different film. We don’t get that credit at all."
From a VFX-heavy Brahamastra to the family-centric Kapoor And Sons to a quirky movie like Hasee Toh Phasee, Dharma has often dabbled with unique content, but it seems like the filmmaker is still often asked when he will produce a different movie. The 50-year-old producer shared, "While I directed Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, I also directed My Name is Khan but (even then) I’m also asked, ‘Aap kuch alag kab karoge? (When will you do something different?)’ Now what more different can we do?"
Talking about the Vicky Kaushal starrer, he shared, "This is a very different film and we are very proud of it. I’m always looking for a good story and when that comes on my table, I get excited." Karan also revealed that he was shocked when Shashank Khaitan pitched him the script of Govinda Mera Naam. He shared, "I was like, ‘Shashank, when did you write this? You can tell me if you’ve lifted this from somewhere, some world cinema, or some other language film, please tell me now or there would be legal problems.’ He said, ‘No no, this is absolutely original.’ I took a beat and thought, ‘My God, such a good storyteller, showing such versatility’."
Talking about the movie, it stars Vicky, Bhumi Pednekar, and Kiara Advani in lead roles. The film follows the life of Govinda Waghmare, a struggling choreographer, wedged between his wife Gauri, who has a boyfriend (played by Viraj Ghelani), and his girlfriend Sukku. The movie will stream on Disney+ Hotstar from December 16.
