Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah often makes headlines for his controversial statements. Recently, he is receiving severe backlash online for saying, “Mughals were refugees” in an edited viral video that has taken the internet by storm. A certain section of netizens are miffed with Naseeruddin over his statement and are expressing their disappointment with him on Twitter. In a clip circulating on social media, Shah is seen speaking to journalist Karan Thapar. 

He told him that Mughals came to India to make it their homeland and therefore, they can be called ‘refugees.’ His statement surely did not go down well with some netizens who trolled the actor for the same. #naseeruddinshah has been trending with users slamming Naseeruddin.  One Twitterati tweeted, “Why this relentless obsession with invaders? A new low – ‘Mughals are refugees’…(sic).”

Another said, “If you think Mughals were refugees, and Aryans were invaders, Then your mental treatment is required.#naseeruddinshah.” One tweet read, “#naseeruddinshah says Mughals contributed to India's culture, music,left lasting legacies. Yeah, Right! Just like talibanis are contributing to Afghanistan. Rohingyas are contributing at present. For sure, this man is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome.”

In the video, Naseeruddin Shah said, “The so-called atrocities of the Mughals are being highlighted all the time. We forget that the Mughals are people who have contributed to the country. They are people who have left lasting monuments in the country, who have left the tradition of dancing, music, painting, literature. Mughals came here to make this their homeland. You can call them refugees if you like.”

To note, a few lines in the viral video have been edited out. Well, this is not the first time when Naseeruddin had been criticized for his statement. A few months ago, he raised many eyebrows after he expressed his displeasure over a section of Indian Muslims celebrating the Taliban’s capture of power in Afghanistan.
