Irrfan Khan passed away at the age of 54 after a long battle with cancer last year. The news left his legion of fans shocked and heartbroken. Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, who was equally sad, recalled his conversation with the late actor, before his death in April last year. In a new interview, Naseeruddin said that Irrfan knew about his death for about two years.
Speaking to Indian Express, Naseeruddin said, "That was a unique thing because Irrfan knew for about two years that it was going to happen. I spoke to him several times over the phone even when he was in the hospital in London. It was amazing and it was a real lesson how he dealt with it."
"He would say: 'I am observing death approaching me and how many people get that opportunity? To be able to see the grim reaper coming towards you and you are almost welcoming him'. Of course, it was a terrible loss. But it was not in our hands. It was just your bodily machinery shutting down. You don't have any control over it," he added. Days after Irrfan Khan's demise, his wife Sutapa Sikdar released a statement on behalf of their two sons Babil and Ayaan, and herself. It read, "How can I write this as a family statement when the whole world is taking it as a personal loss/ How can I begin to feel alone when millions are grieving with us at the moment? I want to assure everyone that this is not a loss, it is a gain. It's a gain of the things he taught us, and now we shall finally begin to truly implement it and evolve."
"Funnily, our life was a masterclass in acting, so when the dramatic entry of the 'uninvited guests' happened, I had by then learnt, to see a harmony in the cacophony. The doctor's reports were like scripts which I wanted to perfect, so I never miss any detail that he sought for in his performance," it added.
