Mr India 2: Javed Akhtar Slams Shekhar Kapur, ‘Scenes, Lyrics, Title- I Gave It All, How Can Your Claim Be More Than Mine?’

There seems to be a row over Mr. India remake, and Shekhar Kapur who originally helmed the film, questioned how a director’s creative rights can be overlooked. Replying to the same, Javed Akhtar claimed that it was him who gave the dialogues, lyrics, characters even the title, how then can Kapur’s claim on the film be more than his?

Ever since the announcement of Ali Abbas Zafar’s Mr. India trilogy was made, there seems to have been a lot of objections. Starting with Sonam Kapoor, she expressed her disappointment and thought it was disrespectful and underhanded that no one consulted her father Anil Kapoor or the original director, Shekhar Kapur. Shekhar Kapur also raised his objections, hinting at a legal action as well. He questioned how a director’s creative rights can be overlooked. Replying to the same, Javed Akhtar claimed that it was him who gave the dialogues, lyrics, characters even the title, how then can Kapur’s claim on the film be more than his?

Shekhar Kapur’s tweet read, “The argument on a remake of #MrIndia is not that no one took permission from me or even bothered to tell me. The question is. If you are remaking a feature film, based on a director’s very successful work, does the director have no creative rights over what he/she created?” Replying to this tweet of Shekhar Kapur’s Javed Akhtar wrote, “Shekhar saheb the story the situations the scenes the characters the dialogue the lyrics even the title none of these were yours .I gave it all to you . Yes you execute it very well but how can your claim on the film be more than mine . It wasn’t you idea . It wasn’t your dream.”

The original film was written by Salim Khan, Javed Akhtar, and starred Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri in pivotal roles.

Ali Abbas Zafar had announced the remake of Mr. India and had tweeted "Excited to partner with @ZeeStudios_ for an epic trilogy #MrIndia! It is a huge responsibility to carry forward an iconic character loved by everyone. Currently, working on the script, no actor has been locked till now.
