Bollywood and Broadway are natural bedmates, after all they
both are all about music, glamour and a grand spectacle.
After Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Bombay Dreams, now another Indian film is set for a
Broadway debut. Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding is finally ready for the big stage.
The 2001 film was reportedly first envisioned by Mira as a “fully fleshed out
musical” and now that plan has come to fruition.
Before Broadway, it debuted at Berkeley Rep, one of the California’s major
theatres companies, based in downtown Berkeley.

There have been plans for years to bring Monsoon Wedding to Broadway as a
musical, with open casting calls in Palo Alto, New Jersey and Houston.
According to reports, choreographer Bill T. Jones and music director Andy
Einhorn would be involved with the New York production.
The movie and the stage musical track the adventures of an upper middle class
Delhi family as it plans an arranged marriage between their daughter and an
American man she has never met.
Sabrina Dhawan wrote the screenplay and worked on the
Berkeley Rep stage adaptation with Tony nominated lyricist Susan Birkenhead and
Bollywood filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj joining the creative team.
