Mallika Sherawat made her debut with ‘Khwahish’ in 2003 and shot to fame with her bold avatar in 2004 film Murder alongside Emraan Hashmi. She established herself as a sex symbol of Bollywood, as her films were known for their bold and alluring scenes. While Mallika managed to impress the audience on big-screen, and many might not know about it, she faced objections on the home-front.
The 44-year-old actress faced a lot of struggles while she decided to pursue acting as a career. In a recent interaction with Bollywood Bubble, Mallika opened up about her rebellion against patriarchy, and disowning her father's family name. Mallika also added that she went on to adopt her mother's name Sherawat and moved to Mumbai to follow her dreams.
“I faced a lot of opposition from my family. I battled patriarchy. My father is extremely conservative. My mother also, my brother also. I had no support at all.” She added, “I was so naive and innocent. I said, ‘main toh bag ke aise ban jaungi actress’.” Mallika continued, “Aur mein actually bhag gayi ghar se,” shared Mallika Sherawat.
The actress also revealed that she would be married if she hadn't run away from home. “Luckily, everything worked out,” said Mallika as she recalled the time when she came to Mumbai.
She continued, “I always had money, because I had a lot of jewelry, which I sold and financed my trip to Mumbai, but more than that it was emotional distress for me. My drama with the family and my father disapproving and saying that I disown you. And my mother being heartbroken. There was a rift in the family. That caused a lot of heartbreak for me.”
Speaking about the difficulties she faced, Mallika added that everyone takes time to absorb the culture after coming to a big city like Mumbai. But the actress revealed that she settled quickly.
Mallika was last seen in RK/RKAY which had a theatrical release in the US and Canada only. Directed by Rajat Kapoor, the film also featured Rajat Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey, Chandrachoor Rai, Kubbra Sait and Manu Rishi Chadha among others. The actress has been away from showbiz for quite some time now, and has stayed in touch with her fans through social media. But now she’s coming back with a new web series titled Nakaab.
