Actor Sharad Kelkar garnered praises for the portrayal of a transgender in Akshay Kumar starrer Laxmii. Though a 15 minute role, he garnered a lot of attention from the audience. In a conversation with Navbharat Times, he spoke about how transgenders are treated in society and how society needs to change. He also shared how his daughter praised and liked his onscreen avatar of a transgender.

The actor shared it was painful to hear their stories, he said, “Our director Raghav Lawrence had composed the film earlier, so he had all the little information about the character like expression and body language. Also, before the shooting and also on the shot, I used to talk with transgenders and listen to their stories. It was very painful to hear their stories, how the family and society have misbehaved with them.”

He also shared how instead of making our children comfortable with their existence, we have kept them away, thus leading to a rise in fear for the transgender community among the children. And this is leading to the destruction of humanity, the actor also shares how society feels they are loud, but according to him, when you push someone away, the person needs to be loud to make his presence felt. He said that society hasn't given space or platform to the LGBTQ community, and that their reaction will naturally be loud.

He also shares that even though the country has a law in place for transgenders, society has to change as well. He said, “The law of the country has done its job for the transgender community, but now the society will also have to change, and should accept the transgender community from its heart. Earlier the level of education was low, now there is all the information in the world of movies, books and internet, so people especially the youth need to be aware. The country will have to come forward in this change. People from the LGBTQ community are often bullied by youngsters, which is not good. To be honest, they have the qualities of both a man and a woman. They are more developed than us and are sensible.” ALSO READ: Laxmii: Sharad Kelkar Reminisces The Shooting Experience Of Akshay Kumar-Kiara Advani Starrer; 'The Memories Are To Be Cherished Forever’
