The Nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar revolutionized the music scene in India and charmed people with her melodious voice. The legendary playback singer will celebrate her 90th birthday on September 28. Lata Mangeshkar is a Bharat Ratna recipient and has had a long career span in Bollywood which began with the song Paa Lagoon Kar Jori for Vasant Joglekar’s 1946 movie Aap Ki Seva Mein. The melody queen first started her career in 1942 with Marathi songs and over the years, she gave her voice not only to Hindi songs, but also recorded songs in regional and foreign languages.
Now, the legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar in a candid interview with Hindustan Times, opened up about the temper issues she had as a child and other details of her life. She said that her biggest personality flaw as a child was her temper and that changed as she grew older. “My biggest personality flaw was my fierce temper. Even as a child I had a major temper issue. I would get angry very quickly. This changed as I grew older. Then there came a time when my temper vanished. Now I don’t get angry at all. I sometimes wonder what happened to my fierce temper,” said Lata Mangeshkar.
While Lata Mangeshkar’s popularity in the music world is unparalleled, she is very humble about her achievements and when mentioned about Javed Akhtar’s compliment that her singing epitomizes perfection, the queen of music humbly replied, “Oh, there are so many of my songs that are considered flawless but are actually flawed. I can hear those flaws that you can’t. And believe me, I cringe every time I hear those flaws in my singing.”
Lata Mangeshkar was bestowed with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 by the Government of India. She was also awarded the Bharat Ratna and after M. S. Subbulakshmi she is the second vocalist to receive this honour.
