Kiran Rao has expressed contentment following her divorce from Aamir Khan. In a recent interview, Rao candidly shared that although parting ways was a challenging decision, she is ultimately happy they divorced. Aamir and Kiran publicly announced their separation in July 2021. During an interview with Faye D’Souza, Rao described the divorce as "very happy." She emphasized the importance of redefining relationships over time, as people change and their needs evolve. "We need different things, and this [divorce] is what I felt would make me happy and has made me very happy, honestly," she stated. Reflecting on her life before marrying Aamir, Kiran revealed that she had been single for a long period and enjoyed her independence, despite occasional loneliness. Now, with her son Azad in her life, she no longer feels lonely. She noted that loneliness is a common concern for people who divorce or lose a partner, but she has not experienced it. Instead, she feels supported by both her family and Aamir’s family, which has contributed positively to her post-divorce life. Kiran also acknowledged that ending their 15-year marriage was not easy for either of them. She disclosed that Aamir needed time to come to terms with the divorce emotionally and mentally. Despite the difficulty, Kiran was confident she would thrive post-divorce, as she sought independent time for herself and her life.
In conclusion, Kiran Rao emphasized that despite their divorce, she and Aamir do not need legal validation to define their relationship. "There’s a lot of love, respect, shared history, shared laughs, and shared ideology between us," she said. Kiran did not want to lose these aspects of their bond. She felt secure enough to acknowledge that although they are no longer married on paper, their partnership remains strong and meaningful. "This is a partnership which will stand the test of time despite the divorce," she affirmed.
