Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan is often vocal about women's empowerment and the issues females have to tackle in an orthodox society. However, this time she took a rather different approach towards women and their desire to adopt western culture. Now, she has questioned why women have to wear western clothes.
In a conversation with her granddaughter, Jaya Bachchan raised the question against Navya Naveli Nanda and daughter Shweta Bachchan during the former’s podcast ‘What The Hell Navya’. The topic of the latest podcast was ‘One Crown, Many Shoes’.
Well, the question might seem rather unusual. During an earlier episode titled Modern Love: Romance & Regrets, the 74-year-old actress spoke about physical attraction in a relationship. The veteran actress also mentioned that she has no qualms if her granddaughter decides to have a child without marriage. Jaya Bachchan’s remarks certainly raised eyebrows.
Meanwhile, the veteran actress had rather contrasting views about women and their choice of clothes. She asked both Navya and Shweta, “Why is it that Indian women are wearing more western clothes?”
Trying to reason with her mother, Shweta said, “It is because of ease of movement. A lot of women today are not just at home, they are going out, they are getting jobs. It is easier to pull on a pair of pants and a t-shirt than it is to maybe drape a saree.”
Sadly, the Guddi fame was unconvinced with Shweta’s reasoning, as she argued, “I feel very unknowingly we have accepted that the western clothing gives that man-power to a woman. I would love to see a woman in woman power. I am not saying, ‘go wear a saree’. But in the west also, women used to dress in dresses. This whole thing changed much later when they started wearing pants.”
However, Abhishek Bachchan’s sister went on to explain her views as she pointed out the industrial revolution.
She explained, “With the industrial revolution, when all the men went to war, women started working in factories and they had to wear pants because you could not do all the heavy machinery work…”
Navya, on the other hand, chimed in by talking about female CEOs who wear sarees and Jaya said that it is so because they are “self-made and are confident in their skin.”
One thing is for certain, Jaya Bachchan does not mince words, she has never been shy about expressing her views. ALSO READ | Navya Naveli Nanda Opens Up About Jaya Bachchan's Statement On Having Kids Without Wedding; Shares, 'Felt Comfortable To Talk About Relationships'
