After taking the social media by storm for his ‘26/11 Mumbai attacks’ comments at an event in Pakistan, renowned lyricist and screen-writer Javed Akhtar recently launched his Urdu poetry album ‘Shayarana-Sartaj’ alongside his wife Shabana Azmi. At the launch, he emphasised on the fact that Urdu is indeed an Indian language, spoken specifically in the region of Punjab, and its importance in the history of Hindustan.
He went on to express his displeasure of people not speaking in Urdu due to the misconception that it is a Pakistani language. The veteran stressed that the language purely belongs to India and not Pakistan or Egypt. He shared how languages are based on regions and not religions. The 78-year-old further added that the language isn’t spoken anywhere other than Hindustan. Bursting the myth that Urdu is a Pakistani language, Akhtar claimed that the country only came into existence after its partition from India. He went on to talk about how Punjab has a huge contribution towards Urdu. He went on to question, “Why did you leave this language? Because of partition? Because of Pakistan? Urdu should be given attention. Earlier it was only Hindustan - Pakistan later separated from Hindustan. Now Pakistan said that Kashmir is ours...will you believe that?”
Expressing his displeasure that the new generation is focused on speaking English that they are forgetting about their own languages. He stressed on the fact that one should speak in Hindi as it is our national language. He further stated, “Language is not based on religions, but of regions. If language was based on religion, then the whole of Europe would have one language. That's why the language is not of religion, but of the region.”
Talking about his poetry album, the heart and soul behind ‘Shayarana-Sartaj’ is Satinder Sartaaj. The album comprises beautiful Urdu poetries from Punjab.
