Bollywood has seen many popular artists in music, but Jagjit Singh and his Ghazals were most iconic. Although many singers in the recent times and past have tried renditions on Jagjit Singh’s classic Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho from the 1982 film Arth, the original song has left many speechless. While Jagjit Singh’s soulful voice left a place in everyone’s heart, apart from his work and music career, his personal life one of the most spoken topics. On Jagjit Singh’s eight death anniversary, we take a look at the iconic singer’s love life with his wife Chitra, their marriage and lots more.

Singh met his wife Chitra in a recording studio in 1967 while he ruled the world of music with his talent. During their first project together, Chitra did not want to record a song with Jagjit as she discovered his voice to be heavy. Later, Chitra accepted to record a jingle with Singh which kick-started their journey of love. The couple worked on many projects and which also consisted of several Punjabi Tappe.

The chemistry between Jagjit and Chitra grew stronger with time, which was when Jagjit finally proposed to Chitra for marriage. While Chitra rejected Jagjit’s proposal, Singh being brave at heart, went to Chitra’s first husband Debo Prasad and asked him for her hand in marriage and told him that he wants to marry his wife. While Jagjit Singh and Chitra’s love life blossomed, the couple was hit with tragedy when their beloved son Vivek passed away in a gruesome car accident at the young age of 20 in 1990. As Vivek’s death left Chitra heartbroken, she took off from music and decided to follow the path of spirituality. Meanwhile, Jagjit Singh also took a break from his music for around a year and returned to music to only express his sorrow. While the couple was facing a lot of sorrows, Chitra faced a troubled time when her daughter Monica from her first marriage committed suicide in 2009.


Chitra and Jagjit Singh were heartbroken with the repeated tragedy in their family. Two years later after Monica’s death, Chitra lost her beloved husband Jagjit Singh too in 2011.

Jagjit Singh was the King of Ghazals and took his last breath on October 10, 2011. On his eight death anniversary, Jagjit Singh has left us with his soulful and melodious voice and ghazals.
