Aamir Khan has joined hands with the Maharashtra government to work towards making the state drought-free.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement a few minutes ago, at a function in the state guest house at Malabar Hill.

“Aamir has said he doesn’t want to be the brand ambassador of our water conservation project. He solely wants to focus on doing the groundwork,” the CM said, adding, “The government completely stands by Aamir’s initiative.”

Eminent personalities, including Mukesh Ambani, Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Mangalam Birla have pledged their support to the scheme, which aims to make 80,000 villages free from water crisis. A whopping Rs 350 crore has already been collected in this regard.

The initiative was conceptualised and executed by Aamir and Satyajit Bhatkal, the director of television show Satyamev Jayate. The actor had first approached the government with this ambitious project in May 2015.

As per the initiative, each village will have a celebrity mentor who will monitor and inspire its residents to conserve water. Along with this, technical teams will help them to harvest water. The pilot project will cover the Satara, Vidarbha and Marathwada regions.

The team has also started the Satyamev Jayate Water Cup, where the village which conserves maximum water will be given a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh.

“We want to invest in people, educate and train them in water management and harvesting. We are planning to rope in Nana Patekar as he is already working towards this initiative on his own. Despite my hectic schedule, I will be totally accessible to the Satyamev Jayate team,” Aamir said.
