Actress Tamannaah Bhatia finds herself embroiled in a legal saga as Maharashtra Cyber has summoned her for interrogation regarding the alleged illegal streaming of IPL 2023 on the Fairplay App, which purportedly caused substantial losses to Viacom. The summons dictates her appearance before Maharashtra Cyber on Monday, April 29, to provide her testimony as a witness in the case.
Similarly, Bollywood stalwart Sanjay Dutt received a summons in connection with the same case on Tuesday, April 23, yet he failed to comply, citing his absence from India. Dutt has expressed his intention to request an alternative date and time for the interrogation, thereby delaying his involvement in the legal proceedings.
Tamannaah's summons stems from her purported involvement in promoting the viewing of IPL matches on a subsidiary app of the Mahadev online gaming and betting platform. Reports suggest that certain IPL matches were illicitly streamed on the app last year, prompting Viacom to file a complaint against Fairplay App for infringing upon their Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Viacom, having secured exclusive rights to stream the IPL matches, alleged losses exceeding Rs 100 crore due to the unauthorized broadcasts.

The legal ramifications escalated in December 2023 with the arrest of an employee of the Fairplay App in connection with the case. Notably, statements from notable figures like singer-rapper Badshah, actress Jacqueline Fernandez, and Sanjay Dutt's managers have already been recorded, indicating the breadth of individuals implicated in the controversy surrounding the illicit streaming of IPL matches.
