Perceptions might change about Karan Johar and his take on nepotism after you watch this video which is actually from the year 2014 but has resurfaced on social media today, for obvious reasons. Needless to say it’s gone viral.
Karan appeared on Anupama Chopra's show The Front Row with Deepika Padukone and Tisca Chopra back in 2014 and he made some confessions right from his heart.
In the video, KJo says, "I picked up a chubby girl and I felt something. May be the fact that she was Mahesh Bhatt's daughter also excited me. I don't know. Right now I may say no, but may be that has been a very strong sub-layer. And that is nepotism and we are guilty and I am guilty. I am definitely guilty. Would I have cast Varun Dhawan if he wasn't David Dhawan's son? Because he was David Dhawan's son he was on my set as an AD and that's where I could spend enough time with him to know that he can be a movie star. So as I said, it has lot to do with the fact that there are too many factors in this country that determine movie stardom and I think true talent is the least of them. It is very sad and truly tragic. Would I have been a filmmaker? I am a producer's son. I had no experience, I was an assistant on one film, my father had the platform to give me and therefore I am a filmmaker. If I go through any struggle in my career then I deserve it."
Cut to 2017, recently in London, Karan couldn't hold himself back when asked about the topic. In an interview with Anupama Chopra (yet again) at the London School Of Economics, he finally spoke his heart out when Anupama asked him about Kangana having accused him of ‘nepotism’. She had also called him ‘snooty and intolerant’ to outsiders in the film industry, and said that he is running a ‘movie mafia’.
In reply to Kangana’s statements, the ace filmmaker responded to Anupama saying that Kangana doesn't seem to know the meaning of nepotism as he has not promoted any of his family members in the industry. He added that he has in fact introduced 13 new directors, most of whom have no Bollywood connections, and so clearly he is not nepotistic.
Guess Karan spoke too fast and forgot about his statement which he made in 2014? Or has the situation changed and so has Karan’s mindset about it?
Whatever the case be, the video might leave Kangana smirking, after all.
