Today, on October 02, 2023, the nation celebrates the 154th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and cinema also plays a pivotal role in paying homage to the Indian freedom fighter. From  Gandhi Jayanti Hollywood, and Bollywood to regional cinema, every filmmaker has his own vision of Gandhi, however, the basic characterization of our ‘Father of the Nation’ remains the same. 

Richard Attenborough, Shyam Benegal, Jahnu Barua and Rajkumar Hirani are some of the film directors who recreated Gandhian values amid sensitive times of geopolitical tensions and social disharmony. Let us take a dive into some of these films, trying to understand what the man truly aimed for and the relevance of his teachings in the present scenario. 

Gandhi

‘Gandhi’ is one of the most impacting works on Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Sir Richard Attenborough bagged 11 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. While Sir Ben Kinglsey played the role of Mahatma Gandhi, Rohini Hattangadi essayed Kasturba Gandhi in the movie. 

The film is considered one of the best portrayals of Mahatma Gandhi and India’s struggle for independence.

The Making of the Mahatma (Gandhi Se Mahatma Tak)

Directed by Shyam Benegal, ‘Gandhi Se Mahatma Tak’ featured Rajit Kapur essaying the role of  Mahatma Gandhi while Pallavi Joshi portrayed Kasturba Gandhi. What made this film special is that it portrayed MK Gandhi during his 21-years in South Africa. 

Lage Raho Munna Bhai


Directed by Rajkumar Hirani ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’ features one of the most unique characterizations. Sanjay Dutt who plays Munna Bhai undergoes character change trying to spread Gandhigiri 

Sanjay’s Munna Bhai is guided by the ‘Father of the Nation’ on how to win over enemies with love and respect. He also learns about conquering his fears with the power of truth, non-violence, forgiveness and compassion. Rajkumar Hirani’s idea of bringing Mahatma Gandhi to the Munna Bhai franchise resonated with the audiences.
