Just like Bajirao Mastani or Padmaavat helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, his next Gangubai Kathiawadi has also been gripped by controversy ahead of its release. As per reports in the media, the upcoming venture starring Alia Bhatt that shows her as a madam of the brothel in Kamathipura has faced opposition from residents of Kamathipura. A certain section of people have opposed the way Kamathipura has been shown in the trailer as a famous red light area in Mumbai, calling it defamatory and shameful.
According to a statement released in the media, the residents feel the filmmaker has maligned the 200 years old history of the people residing in Kamathipura, also it has hurt their sentiment. In the statement residents also shared how they have worked hard to swipe out the stigma people have about this place. However, this movie has damaged the current as well as future scenario of Kamathipura. The statement read, “The New Alia Bhatt Starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a blatant misrepresentation and an attempt to malign the 200 years of actual history of Kamathipura. It is defamatory, shameful and has hurt the sentiments of the residents of Kamathipura.”
“The residents have worked hard to erase the social stigma attached to the name of Kamathipura, and this movie is extremely damaging to the current and future generations of Kamathipura,” further read the statement.
The statement further mentioned how residents are unhappy with the way someone is cashing on the sufferings of others, but this time they won’t remain silent. To express their objection over it, residents of Kamathipura will be protesting against it today at 12 pm onwards. “Once again a few people are looking to monetize from the suffering of others and this time the residents of Kamathipura are choosing to not suffer in silence. Hundreds of residents of Kamathipura (Youth, women, children, etc) will be gathering at the center of Kamathipura to protest against the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi. They have also previously met with various decision makers and registered their complaint on the same,” was further mentioned in the statement. Alia Bhatt was praised for her hard hitting dialogues in the trailer; the movie will release on July 30, 2021.
