So far the year has seen quite a number of notable medium-to-low-budget straight-to-OTT feature films. These include the Kajol-starrer Tribhanga, the Sania Malhotra helmed Paglaitt the Abhishek Bachchan starrer The Big Bull. But now the big-budgeted blockbuster-built films are about to get on the platform. While there are some major made-for-theatre products now being re-negotiated for the digital platform, here are the three big-ticket films bought by three major OTT platforms at staggering prices, confirmed for the OTT platform.
Toofaan(Amazon Prime): Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and actor Farhan Akhtar have together given us that other big-screen sports drama blockbuster Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which was about the living legend Milkha Singh. Toofaan is about a fictional boxer and has BIG SCREEN written on every frame. Mehra and Akhtar saw no wisdom in waiting for a post-pandemic theatrical release. Yes, this film was designed for the big screen. But then so was Godzilla Versus Kong. One can’t be rigid about the platform at a time like this specially when the price being paid for a digital premiere of Toofaan is a reported 110 crore rupees. After having burnt their fingers with a Bollywood biggie Coolie No 1 last year Amazon wanted to make sure their next Bollywood -blockbuster premiere doesn’t prove a no-show.Streaming from May 21.
Dhamaka(Netflix): Dhamaka is all set to create its own toofan on the digital platform. Sold for a mind boggling Rs 135 crores to Netflix, this Ram Madhvani thriller adapted from a Korean film, was sold to OTT when the project was conceived. It was shot in ten days on a set representing a newsroom. The focus of attention is newshound Kartik Aaryan negotiating with a terrorist who threatens to blow up the city. Dhamaka is expected to …errr… create a bigger dhamaka than any other straight-to-digital Bollywood feature film premiered on Netflix so far. Expected to stream in the first week of June.
Bhuj - The Pride Of India(Disney-Hotstar): A-lister Ajay Devgan’s digital premiere is a war-hero bio-pic. Devgan plays IAF squadron leader Vijay Karnik in this high-maintenance epic-styled saga with authentic battle scenes recreating the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Besides Devgan the film also stars Sanjay Dutt who made his digital debut in last year’s badly received Torbaaz. Bhuj - The Pride Of India directed by Abhishek Dudhaiya was sold to Disney-Hotstar at an estimated price of Rs 90 crores. Expected to stream in July
There are other big screen blockbusters like Sooryvanshi, Bell Bottom and Jhund which may be diverted to a digital platform ,considering the pandemic situation.
