Box-office clashes in Diwali have become quite the norm over the last two decades. Big festival, big money- that's what every filmmaker feels. Luckily, this year, the audiences will not be spoilt for choice and have only the Amitabh Bachchan-Aamir Khan-Katrina Kaif-Fatima Sana Shaikh starrer Thugs Of Hindostan. This is one of the rare occasions when we have a single film hitting theatres during this time.
However, many a times, big films have clashed at the ticket windows and made life difficult for cinegoers as they had to choose which one to watch first or which one to not watch. Often they went into a quandary and watched neither! Is it wise to release films during Diwali? While some might say yes, there is a school of thought that many people do not venture out from their dens and love to pray and party at home instead. Anyway, here is a compilation of some of the big clashes:
Mohabbatein-Mission Kashmir (2000)
Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan collided with Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt at the box-office. There was big hype about both films and people were expecting a lot from them. While Mohabbatein set the cash registers ringing, Mission Kashmir though a good film was not well received.

Dilip Kumar's Mughal-E-Azam was releasing in colour but didn't have a lot of money at stake- hence, it turned out to be profitable. SRK's Veer Zaara rocked at the ticket windows as fans poured in from every nook and corner to watch it. Akshay's Aitraaz turned out to be a sleeper hit. Ramu's Naach was a non-starter.
Garam Masala- Kyon Ki- Shaadi No. 1 (2005)
David Dhawan's Shaadi No. 1 failed to live up to expectations. Salman's Kyon Ki, although loved by the critics, didn't manage to draw the audiences to theatres either. Akki and John won this battle with Garam Masala, courtesy their comic timing.
Shah Rukh Khan collaborated with good friend Farah Khan for Om Shanti Om -- which marked Deepika Padukone’s debut – and the film went on to become a blockbuster. Audience was all praise for the film’s music and performances. On the other hand, Saawariya which introduced Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor disappointed.
All The Best-Blue-Main Aur Mrs Khanna (2009)
Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty returned with another Diwali release, All The Best. However, they faced tough competition from Akshay Kumar's Blue and Salman Khan's Main Aur Mrs Khanna. Neither of the films registered, leave aside making money.
Another Golmaal movie was ready for release, but it had to clash with Akshay Kumar's time travel drama Action Replayy. Action Replayy ended up being one of the biggest flops of Akshay's career, while Golmaal 3 ended up being one of the biggest hits of Ajay.
Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn clashed at the box-office on Diwali this year. And to the makers’ delight, both Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar, managed to do well at the ticket windows, crossing the Rs 100 crore mark.
Karan Johar's Ranbir Kapoor-Anushka Sharma starrer coming-of-age drama created a huge furore just before the release owing to Fawad Khan's presence. However, giving the film tough competition was Ajay Devgn's directorial venture Shivaay. But Ae Dil Hai Mushkil went on to garner good collections, while Shivaay did comparitively lesser business. However, both films won many awards- courtesy largely Ae Dil Hai Mushkil's fantastic music and Shivaay's superb visual effects.
Rohit Shetty was once again back with his Golmaal series last year and to give him neck-to-neck fight at the box-office was Aamir Khan with his production venture Secret Superstar. While Golmaal Again became a big blockbuster in India, Secret Superstar became a superhit in China where Aamir is become a huge draw with the masses
